The Boys Are Back In Town
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS --
After taking 2001 off, Team Azzurri is back to compete in this season's winter league. The announcement came late Thursday afternoon after the team's management confirmed that agreement was reached with all 5 players. All of the 5 players are experienced and have played for Team Azzurri before. The oldest of veterans are Marty Coviello and Jerry Leggiero, whom have been with the team since it's conception in 1998. Also returning is Dan Buonopane who was rookie of the year in 2000. Dan was brought on board in winter of 2000 to assist with the passing game. Before Dan the running game made up 85% of the team's plays and Jerry was only receiver. Also, introduced to the team in the winter of 2000 was Bob Guerrini. Bobby's precision passes earned him the MVP title for that season. Bobby broke many team records that season which includes most completed passes, passing yards, and least turnovers. Joe Lepore is most notoriously known for his winter 1999 appearance. After injuries sidelined two Azzurri players, Joe was given the opportunity to lead the team into the playoffs. Instead, Joe threw 6 interceptions which not only resulted in the team's defeat, but also diminished any chances of advancing into the playoffs.
A source close to the team who wished to remain anonymous had this to say: "It may seem like this was a last minute deal and that the team is scrambling to enter the 2002 winter season, but the truth is that Team Azzurri has been preparing for months". When asked why Gino Tammarro or Larry O'Toole were not on the roster, the team's manager explained that Larry's knee injury in 2000 was very damaging to his career. While Larry has made significant progress, his knee is unable to withstand any stress. Gino on the other hand has been unable to be reached. It is believed that he may be somewhere in Las Vegas where gambling and alcohol has taken control of his life. "The last thing this team needs is distraction" was quoted form Marty. "Gino is a tremendous athlete but what good is it when he doesn't show up for games?".
When asked about strategy the team's Head Coach had this to say: "While it would be foolish for me to disclose actual plays I can tell you this, the team is all around great. Bobby is an incredible QB who is able to make quick decisions and smart adjustments. Jerry and Dan are interchangeable, both have speed, rarely drop a pass, and execute the running game flawlessly. Marty is capable of opening up the field by setting unnoticeable picks and is fairly quick, which is unusual for a snapper. However our biggest secret is Joe. Many people are expecting the same Joe that threw 6 interceptions in a single game. What people don't realize is that Joe is both quick and agile. We have developed some plays that only Joe has been able to execute - he will be a great asset to this team".
